NEW: Roger Stone Sentenced to Over 3 Years in Prison for Lying, Witness Tampering
Thursday, February 20, 2020
“They say Roger Stone lied to Congress.’ Oh, I see, but so did Comey (and he also leaked classified information, for which almost everyone, other than Crooked Hillary Clinton, goes to jail for a long time), and so did Andy McCabe, who also lied to the FBI. Fairness?” tweeted President Donald Trump just prior to the sentencing.
Stone’s sentence also includes two years of probation.
"At his core, Mr. Stone is an insecure person who craves and recklessly pursues attention,” said Judge Amy Berman Jackson prior to issuing her sentence.
Stone, 67, was arrested on Friday, January 25 in a 6 a.m. raid at his home.
The arrest was initially sparked by a seven-count indictment from Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller's office.
Drama Leading up to Sentencing
Stone’s sentencing comes after Federal prosecutors had recommended a prison sentence of 87-108 months for the charges.
However, last week, senior leadership at the Justice Department, including Attorney General William Barr overruled and scaled back the proposed sentence.
During Thursday’s sentencing, Jackson noted that the original sentencing recommendation was “well within the guidelines.”
