New Play Brings Stories of an African Family to Portland

Friday, October 24, 2014

The Family Timeline at The Winningstad Theatre on Saturday, October 25.

Portland writer and director George Faux is bringing The Family Timeline, a comedy that follows an African family, to Winningstad Theatre, Saturday October 25.

"Portland needs to see The Family Timeline in order to put a face on the African family,” said director and writer George Faux. “Africa is always in the news, and it's never for anything good. Ebola is important, these struggles are important, but we are also people with families, and we have our own stories that are just as valid.”

The Family Timeline is a modern day interpretation of an African family through three stages of their development. It’s The Cosby Show meets All in the Family, in pigeon English.

The all black cast includes Portland based actors Chido Dhliwayo, Clifford Owusu, and child actor Anthony Kamanda. "I wanted Portlanders of color and Portlanders from Africa to be able to see a black cast, and an African cast. We don't see ourselves on stage or on the screen nearly enough, and it hurts the community to be invisible like that," said Faux.

Faux hopes that the audience learns, "even if you come from Africa, or America or Canada, we're all the same inside. We're all amazing, and funny, and we struggle and fight with our families, but we support each other and love each other in the end.”

Faux produced his first play in Portland back in 2009. "Like everybody else, I have a day job. I do construction, but it's all to support my vision of bringing people together through my work," said Faux.

See The Family Timeline at The Winningstad Theatre, 1111 SW Broadway in Portland on Saturday, October 25 at 7:00 pm. Buy tickets here
