The Portland City Council approved new rules that would afford more protections to the city’s renters on Wednesday.
As GoLocal reported last week, the new rules, which were passed unanimously, require landlords to give renter 90 days notice before issuing a no-cause eviction or if they plan to raise rent prices by five percent or more in any one year.
Previously, landlords were obligated to give only 30 days notice before terminating a lease or increasing rent. If landlords do not follow the new rules, they could owe tenants as much as three months rent, along with any damages, attorney fees and costs.
Saltzman, who introduced the legislation, said the new provisions do not go far enough to protect renters in the city, but does “provide a safety valve” for renters, who face ever increasing rent prices and low vacany rates.
Saltzman said he did not believe all landlords acted wrongly, but thinks that no-cause evictions have been abused.
