This week, Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) announced the upcoming opening of their first faculty and alumni exhibition at their new flagship campus in the historical Federal Building. The exhibit, entitled Holding Sway, begins on September 3rd and runs through October 18th.
Honoring both their alumni and the artists, designers and scholars within their faculty, Holding Sway will feature the creations of 41 faculty members and 31 alumni.
The self-selected works of the faculty members were presented to the faculty exhibition committee. Following this, the committee chose which works would be featured in the exhibit. Meanwhile, faculty members in the exhibition each chose a work from an alumnus or alumna to be presented in Holding Sway.
According to Mack McFarland, Curator and Director of Exhibitions, the title of the exhibit, Holding Sway, comes from a phrase, “to hold sway.” The phrase refers to “the ways the flow of learning, teaching and influence runs both ways in the classroom, studio and lab.”

PNCA’s first First Thursday attracted hundreds of people, involved lots of refreshments (popcorn and wine) and was an opportunity for the public to explore the school’s art galleries and student projects. The gallery currently features "Gathering Autonomy: Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative," a cooperative of 30 artists whose work focuses on radical social, environmental, and political topics. There was also work from PNCA students, alumni, and faculty presented at the gallery on the third floor. And there was lots of banging from a community drum circle.
