Portland Community College To Host A ‘Space Age Gala’ Fundraiser

Wednesday, April 01, 2015

Portland Community College (PCC) will be hosting their fourth annual fundraising gala on Friday, April 10th. This year’s theme is Lunar Landing: A Space Age Gala. According to Mary Kalafatis, the Managing Director of PCC’s Foundation, the theme serves as a metaphor for what is possible. The theme also underscores the era in which PCC first opened their doors back in 1961.

“There was a time, before 1969, when we didn’t think a human could land on the moon – and we accomplished that,” said Kalafatis. “Similarly, there are students who don’t have the money to attend college, making the idea of college outside their reach.”

Last year the fundraiser raised more than $300,000 for scholarships and student success initiatives. Since the gala began back in 2012 the school has raised nearly $1 million dollars for over 800 PCC students.

“Thanks to the deep generosity of our friends and supporters, the PCC Foundation is able to create life-changing opportunities for students,” said Kimberly Cooper, the PCC Foundation board chair.
