Five Fun Things to Do This Weekend: Jan. 30 - Feb. 1

Friday, January 30, 2015

The Oregon Symphony will perform the Stark Trek score at a live screening this weekend.

This coming weekend is all about the Super Bowl, but what do you do if that’s not your jam? You can attend the assorted list of musical and theatrical performances (with a 5K run tossed in) that GoLocalPDX has kindly picked out for you. Go forth and have fun.

Threesome
A world premiere at the Portland Center Stage of a play mixing international politics, romantic relationships, and extremely awkward sex. In order to fix their relationship issues as a couple, Leila and Rashid, two Egyptian Americans, invite a relative stranger over to have a threesome. Lighthearted and comedic on the surface, this play sets out to explore the emotional turmoil springing from sexual assault and recovery. Written by playwright Yussef El Guindi. Threesome looks to be one hell of an emotional journey. Ellen Bye Studio Theater, 128 NW 11th Ave., 443-3700. 2 pm and 7:30 pm, Tuesday -  Sunday Jan. 28 – March 8, $20-50. Click HERE to purchase tickets. Recommended for ages 17+

Worst Day of the Year Run
This name may end up being a misnomer if the weather continues to be sunny this weekend, but it’s the spirit that counts! Thousands of costumed runners will be running a 5K race through Troutdale to raise money for the Portland Polie Bureau’s nonprofit Sunshine Division, which provides food and clothing to Portlland families and individuals in need. McMenamins Edgfield, 3236 SW Halsey St., 9am – 2pm, Saturday Jan. 31, $35 pre-registration, $40 day of, $10 kids 12 and under. Click HERE to register.

Evil Dead the Musical
This musical production of one of the most well-known horror movies has a particularly special story. Originally one Portland high school student’s senior project, her school forbid the production from running just two weeks before opening night due to concerns over the content. The Funhouse Lounge is now providing the space for the show’s performances all this weekend. Funhouse Lounge, 2432 SE 11th Ave., 841-6734. 7pm, Friday-Saturday Jan. 30-Feb. 1. $9-13. Click HERE to purchase tickets.

Woman of Heart and Mind: Joni Mitchell Tribute Concert
Time to get nostalgic over the seventies and eighties. The Alberta Rose presents their fourth annual Joni Mitchell tribute concert featuring performances by some of Portland’s best female singers and songwriters such as Anne Weiss, Kriss Deelane, Bre Gregg, nad Paula Sinclair. Alberta Rose Theatre, 3000 NE Alberta St., 719-6005. Doors at 7pm, show at 8pm, Friday Jan. 30, $15 advance and $18 at the door. Click HERE to purchase tickets.

The Oregon Symphony Performs Star Trek
The Star Trek score as it was mean to be performed and heard. This Friday the Oregon Symphony will be performing Michael Giacchino’s epic score to J.J. Abram’s 2009 reboot of Star Trek. Don’t forget to come dressed as your favorite Star Trek character – there will be a costume contest in the lobby prior to the performance. Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1037 SW Broadway Ave., 248-4335. 7:30pm, Friday Jan. 30, $65-125. Click HERE to purchase tickets.
