video: Oregon Zoo Says Goodbye to Rama the Elephant
Tuesday, March 31, 2015
At age 31, Rama was humanely euthanized after animal care staff concluded that he was having too many mobility issues and too much pain.
Rama had been living with a 25 year-old leg injury that occurred in 1990.
The injury took place when Rama fell into a moat after being pushed out of the herd by older female elephants.
According to the zoo deputy, the female elephants regularly behave like this in their natural habitat.
Though in pain, Rama survived with the injury for many years and continued to enrich the lives of others through his sweet disposition and his paintings, some of which were exhibited at the Mark Woodley Gallery.
To say goodbye to Rama, the zoo is planning a memorial where zoo visitors are strongly encouraged to share memories during this bittersweet event.
Watch the memorial video below to enjoy precious moments with Rama one last time.
