New Pedestrian Flashing Lights Installed in East Portland

New pedestrian flashing lights or 'safety beacons' have been installed on SE Stark Street and 113th Avenue, near Ventura Park Elementary School. The beacons aim to make crosswalks safer for pedestrians, especially school children.

The safety beacons were made possible by state funding secured last spring, and are part of a continuing effort to increase funding for longstanding transportation safety and maintenance needs throughout Portland.

Portland Police are strictly enforcing traffic safety laws in the area as part of the new 'crosswalk enforcement action.' The action involves a designated pedestrian crossing at a marked crosswalk while police monitor how motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians adhere to traffic safety laws.

Drivers who fail to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk and pedestrians who fail to follow Oregon traffic laws may be issued a warning or citation.  Portland Bureau of Transportation and Portland Police hold such actions about once a month in various areas of the city.

The five safety beacons will be activated by the start of the school year. An additional 12 will be installed over the next few months.
