Congressional gridlock comes to the gridiron Friday, Oct. 3, when the Jefferson High School Democrats take on the Madison High School Senators on a brand new field, thanks to an effort between public and private figures coming together in what is known as “The 10 Great Fields” project.

Since the project’s inception 10 years ago, nine fields have been completed. The tenth field, Franklin High School, will be completed in 2017 as part of the voter approved 2012 school improvement bond.

Suffice to say, it has taken a total communal effort to see the project come to fruition. Local communities, Portland Public Schools (PPS), and private businesses such as Nike - who contributed over $2 million to the decade long project - are glad to see such a fruitful result from their collaboration.

“It was a marathon and not a sprint, but we are now at the finish line,” said Carole Smith, Superintendent for Portland Public Schools.

Now more than 48,000 kids will have access to well-kept, high-quality fields.

A dedication ceremony will be held before kick-off at 5:30pm, featuring BBQ by Cannon’s Rib Express and a mini festival with games and other activities for all ages starting at 4:00pm. Jefferson High School is located at 5210 N. Kerby Ave.
