College Counseling: Great Schools for Programs in Communication Disorders

Saturday, April 18, 2015

Professional practice in Communication Disorders involves working with people who have impariments of speech, language, swallowing, and hearing. A speech-language pathologist diagnoses and treats language, speech, and swallowing disorders. An audiologist provides diagnostic hearing evaluations and rehabilitation services. The baccalaureate degree is considered to be a pre-professional degree because practitioners in public schools and medical settings need a Masters degree that leads to licensing. The employment outlook continues to be very positive and speech-language pathologists earn a good salary for the amount of effort that is required to be professionally certified. Here are five schools with undergraduate degrees in communications disorders:

College of Wooster, Wooster, OH

  • The Bachelor of Arts degree Communications Sciences and Disorders provides the student with an understanding of normal and abnormal human speech, language, and hearing, and, when combined with the required research and methodology courses, the major prepares the students for graduate work.
  • Communication sciences and disorders majors complete four-semester, supervised practicum in the college’s Freedlander Speech and Hearing Clinic, which functions as an outpatient clinic to the Wooster community.
  • By the numbers: 56% acceptance rate; SAT mid-ranges: CR 550-670, M 550-660; ACT mid-range: 25-30.
